History of the NMMN
1999
On the right steamer
The first of today's NMMN companies, based in Hamburg, was founded by Michael Schütt back in 1999, in the last millennium.
Then as now, hosting and housing applications and servers was part of our standard business. The NMMN brand was quickly registered after the first early successes. Today, the four letters, which often turn out to be tongue twisters, stand for stability, speed and reliability. For many companies in all sectors, NMMN has been the first choice as a service provider in the digital age for years. Numerous customers have remained loyal to us since the very beginning. From the very beginning, the NMMN team has relied exclusively on Linux and open source solutions.
2008
ADSL, SDSL, VDSL and now fiber optics
Back in 2008, when DSL was still the predominant transmission standard, NMMN invested in its own fiber optic network. At that time only as a connection between two data centers, we now operate the NMMN City networkFour data centers are now connected via geo-redundant fiber optic lines. This infrastructure with uplinks in each data center ensures extremely high availability, which our customers appreciate.
2010
High availability is our topic!
Our infrastructure was now highly available, so why not also offer HA clusters (HA for "high availability") for our demanding customers? Initially, we operated dedicated servers with high availability using Linux on-board resources. With the advent of virtualization, we provided tailor-made high-availability solutions based on the open source virtualization solution Proxmox VE , which has been developed since 2005. For data storage, the NMMN team now uses the Ceph distributed file system, which provides the basis for highly available, distributed and robust shared storage.
Due to their enormous experience, many customers chose a dedicated IaaS platform as a reliable solution as HostedPrivate Cloud environments including backup with distribution across several NMMN data center locations.
In line with this, many customers booked fiber optic lines as a point-to-point connection directly to one of our data centers in order to obtain a secure connection to their IT.
2011
Cloud computing spills over into Europe
In 2011, NMMN and IT works! Consulting GmbH & Co. KG (now FKS IT GmbH & Co. KG) entered into acooperation agreement that continues to this day for the provision of a modern infrastructure for business customers in the field of cloud computing in Hamburg.
The name: Hamburg-Cloud.
The backbone and infrastructure for this is the NMMN City network.
2016
The fourth data center location
NMMN opens up another data center location and enters into a long-term cooperation with COLT. The new location is again connected with redundant fiber optic lines via different routes, thus expanding the NMMN City network. An investment that has paid off, as we now operate our infrastructure and that of our customers in both fire compartments (halls) and also supply our customers with the reliable and almost universally available COLT fiber optic lines.
2020
New captain on the bridge
Business at the NMMN companies is going very well and founder Michael Schütt is planning ahead to ensure that the companies continue to be a reliable partner and employer for customers and colleagues in the team. To ensure that the success story continues, Lars Sommerfeldt took the helm at the bridge in 2020 as the new majority shareholder and Managing Director.
Lars brings 30 years of IT experience from the multi-client business under UNIX, Citrix and Microsoft. Before joining NMMN, he was Managing Director of IT works! / FKS IT, where he developed the Hamburg Cloud and successfully positioned the FKS system house as a managed services provider
2021
Partnerships and cooperations
NMMN is expanding its partnerships and cooperations in its core business. In the area of open source software (OSS), for example, we now have a partnership with Proxmox Server Solutions, the manufacturer of the enterprise virtualization solution Proxmox VE and the data backup solution Proxmox Backup Server. We are also involved in the Open Source Business Alliance (OSBA), particularly in the areas of data sovereignty and Gaia-X. We are also working with more and more partners in the field of fiber optic lines for the Hamburg metropolitan region and can therefore offer a dedicated line or Internet access on fiber optic architecture for almost every location.
2022
The crew is growing
Right at the beginning of the year, we welcomed a new colleague to our internal sales team and are very much looking forward to working with him. We were also able to find reinforcements for the Linux system administration department at the end of the year. Gode Wind!
For us, this year is all about data sovereignty and providing the Sovereign Cloud for our customers. And because we meet all the criteria, we have joined the Cloud Services Made in Germany initiative.
2023
Expansion of services
We are continuously expanding our data center locations and welcome our first customers in Berlin. Our Hamburg customers are also taking up the offer to provide geo-redundancy. The demand for S3 storage solutions has prompted us to release our internal service to the outside world. We have also entered into another partnership with DE-CIX for a solution to connect public clouds / hyperscalers. Our online store is now available for easier ordering and our team has also grown again.
2024
Big plans for the anniversary year
2024 will be an exciting year. We have a lot planned for our anniversary year. NMMN is already 25 years old and will of course remain young and innovative. We will continue with the ISO 27001 and ISO 14001 certifications in January. We are planning at least one new data center location and will sharpen our portfolio of security solutions.
